The Leaky Tap Project

Category: Information design | Print design
Duration: 1 week
A lot of times we keep on waiting for the plumber to fix the tap when we don’t realise that one dripping tap can waste around 52 litres of water in just 3 hours!

This project was an attempt to create an instruction manual with simple step by step visuals to fix a leaky tap. These can be understood independent of the language barrier.
Mr Abid Surti founder of Drop Dead Foundation said, “I’ve kept the record of our first year, February 2007 to February 2008. During that period, we visited 1,666 houses on Mira Road, fixed 414 leaking taps free of charge, and saved about 4.14 lakh (414,000) liters of water. Now that is tremendous amount of water that could have been wasted. In India we need to increase the awareness of a Handyman skills to avoid such losses.”
India is a country of many languages, and people do not understand all the languages and their dialects. The constraint given to us was that the visuals should communicate the process and words should not be used to explain them.
The design was a simple foldable A3 size instructional manual cum poster which could easily fit in someone’s pocket.
The visual language was illustrative using single colour making it print friendly. Since the instruction manual would have been used in wet conditions, it was made waterproof to avoid any damages.
