Urushi Workshop
“Take” plates are handmade in Kyoto by the last bamboo-craft maker in the city: Mr. Takigawa Yogoro, this beautiful plates are then covered on the upper side using a precious natural lacquer called Urushi in a technique that combines cut pieces of washi paper and shading in two tones using non traditional colors, the underside of the plates is protected in the process in order to keep its natural color.

Shikki or Urushi Nuri comprehends a very large number of techniques used in Japan since 7000 BC to coat and protect objects using the sap of the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree.

For over 4 months I worked closely with Urushi craftsmen and women, practicing some of the techniques of this art.
