M&S Diamond Jubilee Picnic

M&S Diamond Jubilee Picnic
Packaging Competition for M&S Ultimate Picnic
This was a competition brief provided by Marks and Spencer’s to create the ultimate picnic pack. The theme for the picnic, along with the menu, product packaging and overall carrier packaging were to be chosen and designed by me. I decided to base my picnic around the up-and-coming Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which will be celebrated in the summer of 2012.

I wanted to reflect the rarity of the landmark itself, and the fact it will be a very British occasion, through the outer packaging. I dressed the case in a section of the union jack, using warmer shades of red and blue that would be more fitting for the summery feel and celebratory nature of the event. My intentions were to keep the design and feel of the product up-market and clean, evoking pride in the nationality, straying away from the 'stereotypical British' approach used in the past. I incorporated the stamp as a mark of heritage and as an iconic image of the monarch; yet also relevant to the general public it is something that they can easily relate too. The fact that there are no windows in any of the packages is a symbol of trust, that should be instilled in the shopper and imply the quality of the products on offer. The individual packages incorporated variations of diamond patterns, suggesting a sense of elegance that was complimented by the typeface- Trajan Pro. The Menu featured typically British food that had a regal twist:

Starter- Royal Prawn Cocktail
Main Course- Coronation Chicken Sandwiches
Dessert- Jubilee Victoria Sponge
Drinks- Regal Pimms and Lemonade

Also included in the picnic pack was an oversized union jack to be used as a picnic blanket, all enclosed in red and blue shredded paper evoking the luxurious, no expense spared feel that I was looking for and would be extended from Marks and Spencer's over the Jubilee weekend.
