was holding an exhibition for local Waiheke Island artists to showcase they're work. The art produced could be no larger than 250mm x 250mm , and for sale for no more the $250.
I thought about the concept of small things, and something that always reminds me of words like small, delicate and are eye-pleasing, is teacups. I decided to create a triptych series of threes different teacups and a teapot.
The 3 work well in series, or individually aswell. With my illustrations, I seem to always mix vintage objects (like teacups, old cameras, lace and patterns, books) with bright, peachy colors.
The process in which is create my illustration is:
I arrange and photograph the objects. I then roughly copy the photographs, with an un-sharpened pencil and a thick felt-tip. I can scan in those pencil drawings, adjust and tidy them up in Photoshop or Illustrator.
I then print them off, trace over them very lightly with pencil, then water down acryclic paint and create 5-6 layers of extremely washed down paint on top of the very light pencil traces.
I will do this with 3-4 different colors of the same light pencil sketch, and quite often do a tea-stain aswell.
I will then scan these drips and layers of opaque paint, and combine them with the original thick, dark illustration and perhaps a texture in Photoshop.
