Make Food, Not Waste

Concept Overview
Part of a larger exhibit called "Minnesota Eats" at Minnesota’s 2015 State Fair, this project is the result of a partnership of AIGA Design for Good and The Common Table. The 2nd annual local food stories exhibit, it focused on six interactive and educational stations, each containing a message and action around local and sustainable food topics.

Over the course of about 7 months, from initial research, design thinking, concepting, messaging, designing, and producing, our team created an exhibit on reducing food waste in your kitchen. “Make Food, Not Waste” is an interactive, hands-on kitchen display space showing how to reduce food waste in a relatable and meaningful way to viewers.

Featuring the “4-P’s” and a color coded category system for remembering how to reduce waste in each step of your food buying, consumption, storage and disposal process, surprise reveals in drawers and cabinets, and fun and witty “Hip Tips” scattered throughout, there’s a lot to explore and learn from this engaging and tangible kitchen.

"How Might We" questions we asked ourselves in order to create an impactful exhibit:
How might we get people to value food and waste?
How might we use humor to get people to care about and rally around a positive message of reducing food waste?
How might we educate without boring or preaching?

Reasons for the viewers to take action:
Personal messages and relatable experiences, viewers can see, “How does does effect me?”
Simple and clear actions with visible, tangible benefits motivate people to care and take action.
Consumers can see how they are involved in the food system, and how they can make a difference.

With Minnesota's State Fair attendance of 1.8 million people in 2015, this food exhibit got quite a bit of foot traffic being at Minnesota's biggest annual celebration of food. If you visit the Agriculture Horticulture building next year, you can see the next round of the exhibit!

There are 5 other awesome stations within the exhibit all on other sustainable food topics. View The Common Table's site for more photos and info of the whole exhibit.

And, see the exhibit featured on Kare 11!
