"Cold In Yokohama" series - 01 “Morning Tram”

"Cold In Yokohama" series -  01 “Morning Tram” 「
This is a first illustration in planned 10 piece series.

A beginning of a new illustration series. Just like my last one - “Bicycle Boy” this one also somewhat began inspired by a studio Ghibli movie. The movie “From Up on Poppy Hill” takes place in 1960s Yokohama with it’s old wooden houses, steep hills, trams and busy port. I went by myself and with Kanapeco to look for some traces of the old Yokohama but sadly few are left. There are some foreigner houses preserved and few old shops still open (my favourite is the Miyazaki flower shop which was featured in the movie).

So I decided to begin a series of illustrations showing how I picture Yokohama. Not historically accurate - a mix of what I know, what I saw and liked and what I wish was still there. Also inspired by Miyazaki’s comic works I decided to make the main character a dog. Who he is and what he is doing in Yokohama you must find out by following the series.

Technical stuff:
Lines - mitsu-bishi pencils from HB to 8B
Colours - Shmincke and Winsor and Newton watercolours
Paper - 300g/㎡ Holbein SAUNDERS cold press F4 size
