OVERVIEW
Nova is a comprehensive exhibition devoted to minimalist artist Dan Flavin’s career. It features 44 works, including large-scale installations that articulate architectural space, representing the artist’s use of fluorescent light. This exhibition focused on captivating modern and eclectic young designers; bold artists able to interpret Flavin’s idea of light. The concept and major innovation is the way materials integrate with architecture and the surrounding space. With fluorescent lights strategically placed, the exhibition is able to transform the user perception and provide a new, dynamic experience of space.
STRATEGY
In addition to sketches, drawings, and early work constructions; Nova reveals Flavin’s ideas development and working process. This exhibit has radically limited materials to commercially available fluorescent tubes in standard shapes and colors; extracting banal hardware from its utilitarian context and inserting it into the world of art, and so it goes with design. Branding has exploited limited resources to convey a stronger, memorable identity.
SOLUTION
This project adopted available resources as the primary medium. It standardized shapes and forms, and limited a palette (pink, yellow, green and orange), and restricted the visual vocabulary mimicking Flavin’s perception of light. This identity uses an extended thin type as main typography allowing negative space to interact with the design work and pattern. The project unwraps on varied media using one ink on bright colored paper. Nova identity system often defies viewer’s expectation abandoning conventional solutions addressing its process in a new way; restricting materials was not a limitation, but an enabler to exploit subtle differences, finding depth, meaning and beauty in what others might overlook.
