Challenge:
The Ventriloquist’s Tale is an award winning novel by Pauline Melville. This book is being reprinted and needs a new cover. The cover needs to draw attention to the story without giving away too much of the story. The original cover was very dark with only a slight profile of what would be the main character but is almost too dark and eerie and does not communicate where the story takes place.
Solution:
I created a book cover that would still communicate that the story is a bit dark. The main character lives between two worlds. The setting is in South America and the main character starts off living among tribal people and then moves into town. I created what would look like a shadowy forest with leaves that are very close together and what would look like a fence but is a corrugated cardboard because the town he moves to is not a very wealthy town. I also inicluded a picture of the primitive houses on the back cover. This helps to create a setting for the story as well as setting up a feeling of what the book is about.
