In response to the 2015 D&AD New Blood brief set by Monotype where the task was to create a new typographic lead form of promotion for a retrospective screening of a director of your choice.
The Fincher Film Festival is a retrospective film screening celebrating the life and works of director David Fincher. One of the key aspects of Fincher's films that set him apart from many other directors is his ability to misdirect his audiences emotions and expectations with original plot twists and ever changing storylines. Using this concept as the keystone to the festivals design the aesthetics have been created to play on the idea of misdirection. The festival's branding looks to enhance the sense of misdirection using typography as the leading component in its design. A dark and distressed look has been applied to the festivals design to compliment the sinister aesthetics of Finchers films as well as the disturbing and ominous nature of the films plots.
'As a director, film is about how you dole out the information so that the audience stays with you when they're supposed to stay with you, behind you when they're supposed to stay behind you, and ahead of you when they're supposed to stay ahead of you.'

Motion Piece
A motion piece that would be played prior to the films being shown. The type makes no sense initially but eventually comes together in a distressed way to make up quotes and titles of the films being shown at the festival. The camera moves through the piece in a very controlled way to reference the way Fincher uses cameras in his films as well as giving the impression to the viewer that they are delving into a sort of maze in the same way that the twisting, turning plots of Fincher's films act as a psychological maze.

Festival Invite
The festival's invite is deliverd in a flat evelope but when removed can be folded out to become a cube. Three of the cubes sides contain information about the event, including a quote from Fincher, timings, location and a pull out ticket for one of the films. The fourth side contains a window into the cube where the recipient will be able to allign fragments of letters printed onto ascitate to reveal the festival's name, adding to the idea of Fincher's audience manipulation and misdirection.
