Children’s fairy tales such as ‘Cinderella’ or ‘Sleeping Beauty’endorse a very stereotypical idea of ‘beauty’. Those who do not appearphysically beautiful are often regarded as possessing an evil oruntrustworthy character. In modern society, physical beauty is oftencelebrated more than inner beauty. The lyrics and tone of many 20thcentury songs also adhere to this stereotype.
Encased in a pseudo-jewellery box, these two handmade books, inspired by fairy tales, aim to intensify the message and tone of thesongs ‘You’re so vain’ by Carly Simon and ‘Unpretty’ by TLC. The booksalso aim to encourage the reader to recognise and reconsider thestereotypes surrounding beauty today.
