The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Typography 2 - Typography Book

The Very Hungry Caterpillar!
For our first project, we were to pick a simple story, such as a childhood story, and recreate it into a typography book. The restrictions were that it had to be bilingual and that it had to be purely made of type (no images!).

The story that I chose was: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, and I chose English and Korean as my two languages.

I chose a Lotus Fold for my book as I thought that with the resulting shape, it really best resembled a caterpillar much like the story. The way the book would unfold also compliments with the story, with each turning page resembling the start of a new day as told in the story.

For me the largest challenge was how to create a flow with the different characters. Due to the different sentence structure of the different languages, it was hard to balance the sentences so that it would make sense when a particular language was read.
Overall, the project was extremely fun to do. I think I especially liked the folding of the book both for its compliments to the story as well as the structure of it. It was one of the few times where I felt that the entire 'package' from the binding to the typography really complemented each other.
