This past Thursday was the release of Ella, the children's book written by Mallory Kasdan and published by Viking Press. This process began in September of 2013 and was completed in May 2014. The book is a parody of Kay Thompson's "Eloise" who lived in The Plaza Hotel in New York City, with illustrations by Hilary Knight.; however, Ella lives in The Local Hotel, and has a manny instead of a nanny. My drawings are really an homage to Hilary Knight. He is one of my illustration heros, so when I was asked to create the drawings for Ella, I knew I would be taking on a precious task. I poured so much of myself into these drawings, earnestly bringing in parts of my life: my home, sense of humour, my friends, my love of fashion, art, design and pop culture, and tried to re-imagine them in a whimsical way that could become the perfect stage for this cheeky little girl. We will be hosting a book reading and signing of Ella at POWERHOUSE Arena, in DUMBO, Brooklyn this Sunday January 25 at 3:00-4:00pm. I hope to see some of you there ❤
