New Words - Type Journal

I was tasked with creating a "type journal" that presents 10 examples of good typography for each letter of the alphabet. I was given the flexibility of choosing how to present the type journal and what theme to structure it around. I designed my type journal as a book that presents a new word in the dictionary for each letter of the alphabet. Each spread shows a new word with its dictionary definition along with use in a sentence and a short look at how the word is used in current culture. On the facing page, 10 examples of each letter are displayed. These type examples are curated from online and are meant to cause the viewer to slow down and think about how language is an evolving art form. New words are created with the same 26 letters, much like the 10 examples of type are all based on the same letterform.
To bind this book, I chose to experiment with perfect bound binding. Because only a few copies of this book were produced, all of the binding was done by hand.
I learned how to design a compelling book that draws in a reader and holds their attention through the entire read. Unity and variety were used while maintaining a minimal approach and limited color palate. I also learned how to book bind and how set up files for printing signatures and dealing with creep.
