Veckla Dining Chair

Veckla Dining Chair
ID Project: Product Design Workshop, Spring 2010
Veckla was a project for a product design workshop. The assignment was simple: design a dining chair to be sold in IKEA. It had to be simple and modern, it had to be easy to ship and it had to be inexpensive.

It turns out getting the proportions of the chair right, making it comfortable and look good were extremely challenging. Each week we produced full-size prototypes out of Foamcore and made 3D model in Rhinoceros 3D.

Veckla, Swedish for “unfolding” is a chair of bent birch plywood that comes in a variety of finishes. It is held together by two bolts and is easy to assemble. It looks good in series around a dining table. While others in the class designed chairs that did double duty, I tried to focus on a simple idea: what would I like to see in my dining room. As a larger than average guy, the chair had to no only look good, but had to be comfortable enough to linger over a meal and stability was extremely important.

It was one of my favorite experiences at ID because I learned so much about how simple things are often the hardest to design.
