The Art Garage is exactly that - an old garage - so my inspiration came from vintage gas station signs. Part of the brief stated this had to feel non-intimidating for kids / adults taking classes there, and that drove my color choices to be bright, somewhat primary colors, that also aligned with vintage signs. The 'wings' were again inspired by old gas station signs, as well as art deco motifs, and I think they lent a feeling of excitement - that when you come to the art garage "you'll be able to fly".
The client wanted a 'distressed' version since the idea spawned from old gas station / garage signs. It seemed like a natural jump, though there are ongoing discussions around appropriate usage.
