Plans for the Development of the Back Bay 1859

Received
One lithographic map measuring 40cm x 70 cm. Paper is beige (1) in color, medium (1) in thickness, and smooth in texture [Print Council of America, 1996]. In poor condition.

On the recto side mild surface dirt is found overall, with a concentration along the top edge. Cockling is found along all four edges. The top edge is severely torn, tattered and creased. There is a large fold across the top (15cm). Two tears radiate down from the top edge (6cm), and 1/3 down the the left edge a tear radiates inward(3cm).

On the verso side there is minor surface dirt overall, with concentrations along the left, right and top edges. There are creases overall.

Treatment
Dry cleaned with latex sponges and eraser crumbs where necessary. Humidified between tyvex, remay and plastic. While still under humidity, tears, folds, and losses were mended with Uso Mino tissue (10g) and wsp. Dried and flattened between remay and blotter under moderate weight. Infilled losses with wsp and 1301 Hanji; tissue was toned with water color, toasted cellulose powder, and susu. Locally humidified and flattened remaining creases under weight and blotter.
