CONDITION

Binding: Received one paper covered pamphlet housed in a grey quarter bound pamphlet binder(commercially made by Gaylord Brothers, NY 1908) measuring 30 x 13.5 x 1cm. The front and back corners are worn as are the bottom edges; the back has a dent on the side edge. The cloth tape spine is torn on the top. There is a paper label affixed to the front cover depicting the title, and a library sticker is affixed to the front bottom left corner. On the inside of the back cover there is a maker sticker in the upper left, and a library pocket has been affixed with 2 library cards present in the center.

Paper/media: The pamphlet is covered in a paper wrapper which is blue in color, thin (1) in weight, and slightly textured [Print Council of America, 1996]. The title and publishing information is printed on the outside front cover, and information about the author is printed on the outside back cover. There is a library sticker affixed to the upper right corner of the cover, and "X3" is written twice, in graphite and in red. Some creases and tears are apparent on both covers. The first pages of the text block are composed of 4 leaves beige (2) in color, medium (2) in weight, and smooth [Print Council of America, 1996]. These leaves are acidic, discolored, and brittle. Minor surface dirt, tears, creases, and losses are apparent on all 4 leaves. The rest of the text block (30 leaves) are cream (1) in color, moderately thick in weight, and slightly textured (1) [Print Council of America, 1996]. Minor surface dirt throughout. The edges are discolored. Two folds down the center of the text block are apparent throughout.

Endpapers: The pamphlet is affixed to the pamphlet binder with blue cloth tape adhered to 2 endsheets of a cream (2) color, medium (2) weight, and smooth texture [Print Council of America, 1996]. There is some staining in the top left corner of the first end sheet, and tears along the bottom edge where the tape meets the paper.

Sewing: The text block was stab sewn with three sewing stations. The sewing appears to be intact.

TREATMENT

Spot tests: Spot tested the removal of cloth tape mechanically and with a methyl cellulose poultice. Spot tested the ink on the library stickers with deionized water and que tips to check for fugitive ink.

Paper treatments: Dry cleaned the textblock and covers with latex sponges. Any acidic paper affixed to the cover was removed mechanically, and with a methyl cellulose poultice; and any remaining pieces of acidic paper around the sewing was mechanically removed. The left most edge of the cover was then reinforced with a layer of 5g tangujo toned with watercolors and wsp. Several small tears and looses along the edges of pages 1-8 of the introduction were mended and filled with 5g tangujo toned with watercolors and wsp, and were then encapsulated in mylar. The library stickers were removed from the inside cover by mechanically scrapping the gray cover material from the verso side. Remaining bits of cover material and glue were removed by lightly swabbing the verso side of the stickers with deionized water and que tips.

Forwarding treatment: Pages 1-8 of the introduction broke along their fold points, and so the existing sewing was cut. The blue cover paper, and loose pages 1-8 were removed. Any acidic paper affixed to the blue cover paper was removed mechanically, and with a methyl cellulose poultice. Any remaining pieces of the introduction pages still attached by the sewing were mechanically removed. The verso of the spine edge of the cover paper was reinforced with a layer of 5g tangujo toned with watercolors and wsp. Tears, and losses were also mended with 5g tengujo toned with watercolors and wsp. Several small tears and looses along the edges of pages 1-8 of the introduction were mended and filled with 5g tangujo toned with watercolors and wsp, and were individually encapsulated in mylar.

Binding repair: Medium thick black colored kozo tissue was wrapped loosely around the spine, extending about 1.5 cm onto both covers. A pamphlet stitch was used to re-sew the textblock, covers, and kozo tissue using the original sewing stations, and 18/3 thread toned lightly with susu.

Protective housing: A custom built cased-in four-flap box was made to accommodate the four encapsulated introduction leaves and the pamphlet.

Photographic record: Performed written and photographic documentation before and after treatment. Before treatment: 1. recto 2. opening of pamphlet folder 3. opening of back pamphlet folder 4. title cover During: 1. Pamphlet and paper mends on introduction pages After: 1. opening of four flap box 2. pamphlet and encapsulated introduction pages 3. opening to title page 4. opening of box lid
