This summer I had the pleasure of continuing my work with Switzerland's Filmpodium* program and their annual Retrospective Series (see The Real Eighties and Marilyn Monroe from the past two years). The theme I worked on for this summer's program/lineup was Island Films (InselFilme, the German translation): movies from different eras that had an island as its setting/backdrop. Films that appeared in the series were Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), Island of Lost Souls, Tabu, Battle Royale, The Wicker Man, Sex and Lucia, I Walked with a Zombie, The Most Dangerous Game, Prospero's Books, Lord of the Flies, Edge of the World, and many more.

 

A handful of conceptual drafts were originally made. We finalized on the nautical themed/aged treasure map aesthetic. The aged yellow/gold tone was applied; the film-stills were overlayed on shapes that first started as outlines of islands but then altered to look like burned/ripped holes within the map. Ocean navigation lines were created to enhance the nautical design.

 

*Filmpodium is the most important non commercial art house cinema in the German speaking part of Switzerland. It specializes in retrospectives on film history (directors, actors, genres, countries and all kinds of topics) and in non commercial art house films. Filmpodium collaborates closely with the Swiss film archive located in Lausanne and with other Cinemathèques around the world.
