The Real Eighties - Filmpodium Retrospective Series

Continuing from the work I did with Filmpodium* last year (see the Marilyn Monroe poster), I had the pleasure of creating the promotional poster for their Retrospective series for 2013. The theme for this year's series was "The Real Eighties," which focused on tracing the traditions of “auteur cinema” and realism in the American cinema of the Eighties. This decade can usually be seen as a time of transition back to cheap thrills and to today’s blockbuster cinema. Films that appeared in the series were Prince of the City, Robocop, Under Fire, Tender Mercies, Terms of Enadearment, The Big Easy, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Blue Velvet, The Naked Gun, Something Wild, Rumble Fish and many more.

While creating this I thought about the retro aesthetics that I apply to my other posters (primarily the What-If poster series), but with this being a spotlight on the 1980s I experimented with less "wear and tear" and more on the design we got from that decade (bright colors especially the use of pink, minimal pictures) but without making a parody of the decade (staying clear of "tacky 80s").
