Barcelona's neighborhoods in dialogue
Enviromental, Graphic Campaign, Print

One of Barcelona City Council’s noteworthy initatives is its Pla de Barris, a significant budget package that in the span of 4 years has invested in the betterment of public services and facilities (development of public housing, support to schools, implementation of environmental policies…) with the goal of reverting inequalities among neighborhoods, especially those most in need of public financing. In the framework of the city’s Pla de Barris in the area of Poble Sec, the City Council commissioned us to design a touring exhibition revisiting multiple initiatives carried out in the neighborhood. The show, which was structured around the testimonies of several of the area’s neighbors, had the ultimate goal of fomenting a closer dialogue with the people of the city.

Taking under consideration the nomadic nature of the exhibition, the first part of the project involved devising a series of lightweight reusable structures that could easily be transported and flexibly arranged in each of the locations, with a special emphasis on avoiding the use of plastics. The exhibition’s graphic design drew inspiration from news programmes, and featured a visual language that aimed to be informative but at the same time exude warmth and an egalitarian character through its use of color and typography. Type was selected from a spectrum of humanist options, resulting in a combination of ingredients that was recognizable, yet functional and direct.

The project’s outcome is an exhibition that manages to appear pragmatic, without sacrificing the emotional connection that exists between the exhibited contents and the audience.
