Traditional Chinese Bazi-inspo RPG Character Sheet
"Four Pillars of Destiny. Eight Characters. Bazi is known by many names but it’s based on the Chinese Solar calendar and most recognizable by it’s eight squares that made up four pillars of life." - Ivan Lim
We worked with a Chinese Metaphysical enthusiast to build a series tabletop gaming inspired character sheets, for displaying their Bazi data. We started by discussing the basics of understanding the Bazi system, then sketching the concept art for each of the icons, etc. that will be in the final template design. It was very important that we referenced the actual Chinese traditional belief.
Designing the Elements’ Icons
Sketches were made for each of the five elements, so they would form a uniform style. These were finalized in Adobe Illustrator.
The 12 Zodiac Animals
Legend has it that the Jade Emperor segmented the cycle of years into years of 12, according to the winners of a race to the Heavenly Gate. The winners of these race were ordered as such: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
Deities and the Beasts
These Legendary Dieties took a while to fully comprehend. However, after several rounds of clarification, we agreed on a set of sketches to be transformed into final outlines on Adobe Illustrator, and coloured in on Adobe Photoshop.
