I hadn't done any real 3d animation in some time, when the opportunity arose to do a character based piece I was chomping at the bit to get back in to modelling, animatI hadn't done any real 3d animation in some time, when the opportunity arose to do a character based piece I was chomping at the bit to get back in to modelling, animating and waiting on progress bars!

The client had seen the Kilbowie animation I did and was keen to deliver something similar, early on though it became very clear that the client wanted a lot more movement than would have been possible in 2d, 3d could be the cheaper option if done efficiently. I sketched out a rough style for the piece and determined that we could meet the budget, if we streamlined the process as much as possible. The most cost effective decision made was to have all the characters derived from the others, that way we would only have one rig that would function in the same way for all characters.

I had some help designing the set and characters from Eduardo Iturralde, who created a lot of the 2d concepts that I turned into 3d models. The characters are very cute, I always like the characters to look cute & fun.

I really enjoyed doing this job but I'd like to have had more time/money to take it up a little in terms of the amount of animation, plus I remembered how much I hate rendering. It's tough doing 3d animation as a one man gig, my strong suit is the design & actual animation, I'm not the best modeller, texturererer or renderererer and I think it shows in the final piece! Having to do all those jobs I'm not best at compromises the amount of time I can spend animating the characters properly. At the very least I need a guy (or gal!) who knows the tech side of 3d so I can handle the fun stuff!
