Matchbox Label Designs

These are proposed matchbox cover designs regarding fire safety with household candles. The concepts illustrated are keeping candles out of reach from pets, keeping candles away from flammable items like hair, and refraining from extinguishing candles with water because the hot wax can splash. The designs were constrained to 2.25-in. by 1.4375 in. spaces, so simplifying elements within the composition was crucial to creating a successful design. This challenge encompassed the entire design process, along with properly communicating the fire safety aspect in the designs. Utilizing the addition of a background and border in all three designs unites the designs together as a cohesive set. Having the two colors used, a red and a cyan, and the color made when combined as the individual background colors also tie all of the designs together. When looking at older matchbox labels, many had a small border around the design; this became an inspiration in all of the fire safety designs created since the beginning of their design process. The intended audience for the matchboxes would be the general public serving as a public service announcement on candle fire safety. The public would expect to understand the meaning of the fire safety aspect, safety around candles, from looking at the matchbox labels. When someone goes to strike a match from one of these matchboxes, they will be reminded of the safety message displayed.
