"The Color Purple" Proposed Cover Design

This is a proposed book cover design for The Color Purple using a prominent element from the book to create an intriguing cover for future readers. The book cover needed to combine the front cover, spine, and back cover cohesively while also having a compelling composition; this being the main challenge to be accomplished. Mirroring the design on the front cover to the back cover adds a sense of harmony, though the design is lighter on the back cover. Having the text, aside from the book title and author’s name, be hand-written also unites the entire book sleeve together. Having the book title and author’s name be digital type creates interest and contrast on the front cover. To create the design, inspiration was taken from the movie adaptation of the book. In the movie, hundreds of letters written from her sister are discovered after years of being hidden from the main character, Celie. The sort of descent into madness that comes with losing hope is illustrated with her name, Mrs. Celie Harris Johnson, repeated with the weight of the name increased. The intended target audience for this book cover would be the general public, specifically readers and shoppers. The design should peak the public’s interest in the subject of the book causing them to wonder how the story transpires and, in turn, have them purchase the book. The design was made to cover an 8 inch by 5.3 inch book.
