I'm working on set of small concise exercises to help expand my creativity. I call them Creative Katas, kata being a type of form practice from martial arts. Here's my third one.
Challenge: Take the title card you did in the last exercise and alter it to match various genres.
Restrictions: None
Background: I saw an article (http://annyas.com/screenshots/warner-bros-logo/) on the evolution of the Warner Bros, and I really love the way they adapt their brand to the various movies they produce. It’s quite a brave move as they are trusting that they’re not diluting their brand by constantly changing their logo around.
Freedom: Any font, any color, any copy, any layout, any imagery
Time Limit: 20 mins per genre.
Genre List:
Martial Arts
80’s video game movie
Optimistic SciFi
Urban Fantasy
Napoleonic Era Crime Drama
80’s video game movie
Optimistic SciFi
Urban Fantasy
Napoleonic Era Crime Drama
Advice: I would brainstorm and collect reference for what looks you want to achieve beforehand. But no manipulating anything until you start the timer.
The original:
For my first one, I chose Urban Fantasy, my result:
I think this is a case of me achieving exactly what I was going for, but it not being good. My execution worked, but the idea was bad.
For my second one I chose Optimistic Sci Fi, my result:
This was my favorite of the mix. It’s simpler and cleaner than the other two. It also benefits from my original font choices working with the genre a lot better. It’s my favorite of the bunch.
My final choice was Napoleonic Crime Drama, my result:
In some ways I like this. I’m not happy though with how far from the original brand I went. I also don’t think I nailed the genre. The coin and font choice make the whole thing feel more Ancient Rome then Napoleonic. So I feel like there was some good here, but it’s not my favorite.
I'll go into more depth with each design in their own projects.
