Heydar Aliyev Center
Rhinoceros + Grasshopper facade design exploration

This project focused on the exploration and composition design process developed by Zaha Hadid Architects for the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku. Using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper scripting it is intended to recreate the design complexity and parametric design process implied on the creation of free-form envelopes and organic spaces.
The resulting shape is rendered using 3d Max and Corona render for visualisation pursupese.
Rhino + Grasshopper process
Drawing the general outline free-form lines using splines in the rhino interface.
Following the lines from rhino (curves) the grasshopper script creates a mesh joining each line´s control points.
As a result the mesh is created and "baked" into rhino where it is transformed into a subD allowing manipulation and modeling the entire external facade.
Usign the vertex and control points from the subD, the grasshopper script creates a mesh offset as the inner facade. As the resulting vector of each point grows in the X plane, the offset is greater, and vice versa. The maximum thickness is set to 200cm and the minimun is set to 50cm.
Using the CatMull Clark subdivision parameter, the subD mesh is divided in order to generate the facade paneling, assuring that each panel gets a quadrangular face, and so to get closer to the actual project facade.
