Popping the Plan

Aim: To engage design in the complex dialogue between community, planning and dwelling.

Content: We had 3 days to design a 'pop-up' urban shelter for the Morningside Train Station to communicate awareness for the Auckland Unitary Plan, housing densification plans.

Proposal: The dining table had traditionally been a space for communication and a platform for sharing ideas. Our design has embodied a table aesthetic to enthuse and encourage communication between those waiting at the railway for their train. The shelter aspect of our design takes formation when several people work together to transform this seating area into a shelter structure by simply pulling upwards on the handles on the outer edges of the table.

This allows our shelter to literally pop up and creates a space for people to stand under in bad weather.
Our pop up table design embodies the concept of growth and community integration by only being able to rise with more than one person helping. The table to shelter is an interesting and intriguing concept that is designed to maximize shelter space between the two original shelters at the railway. It is used to introduce a playful and informative technique of sharing information of the Auckland Unitary Plan, focusing on the Growth/Densification aspects whilst encouraging public transport.

Once the table has risen to its shelter formation, those standing underneath can observe the informational graphical imagery within, about the unitary plan. The shelter can be popped back down to its original table structure with ease.
