Mission
Île-de-France Mobilités together with the two operators, RATP and SNCF, launched a tender for the renewal of the train units running on the RER B in the Paris region which was won by Alstom-CAF.
Prior to the tender, Alstom-CAF wished to conduct an innovative exploratory study with the aim of identifying new ideas that would address as much as possible the users’ needs so that they would be developed in the new vehicle.
Alstom-CAF entrusted Yellow Window with a service design mission that involved in situ observations by a designer and anthropologist team, co-design workshops facilitation involving RER B users, so that the feedback and the translation of the findings would be converted into tangible proposals

Result
Following the observations and co-design workshops, Yellow Window structured an idea book in the form of a "RER Lab" listing 38 ideas/innovations and their benefits for both the user and the operator.
This idea book served as an input data for the studies conducted by Alstom-CAF teams and for the industrial design mission entrusted to Yellow Window at the response phase of the call for tender for rolling stock.
This idea book was then expressed by Yellow Window into 3 design concepts which were presented to the public for consultation in July 2021, with the aim of defining both the interior and exterior design.
