Andhra Art Apartment

The Andhra Art apartment draws inspiration from the crafts of Andhra Pradesh (India) and also depicts the culture of Andhra Pradesh through the means of Spatial design. Indigenous crafts of Andhra have been explored, developed and locally produced, wherever possible.

The 2BHK apartment was designed as a part of my Diploma Project while studying at the National Institute of Design, India.

Contextual art and furniture design have been utilised to communicate the culture and the essence of Andhra.

The Entrance Area

Auspicious symbolism, welcoming cultural elements and the colourfulness of Andhra cuture form the inspiration behind the design of the entrance area elements, giving it a very positive and welcoming theme.

The main door, the art and the lamp have been derived form a semiotic process of enquiry and abstraction in order to keep it as secular as possible.

An introduction to the rich culture of Andhra Pradesh would be incomplete without its rich Temple Architecture, the vibrant Kuchipudi classical dance, Kalamkari- coupled with a touch of the nature and natural elements of Andhra.

All these become points of inspiration out of which the design of each and every element in the room is derived from and tied together in a narrative - The Furniture, the Sculpture, the Painting and of course, the overall look of opulence that reflects their love of Gold.

The crafts of Block-print Kalamkari and Etikoppaka (Turned wood laquerware) inspire the design of the master bedroom.

The elements of Etikoppaka-such as the lamp, the headboard elements, hangers etc have been developed and produced locally, as a means of supporting the indigenous craft and craftsmen.

Ikat dyeing technique and the leather puppets of Tolu Bommalata craft are the inspiration for the guest bedroom.

Ikat has been abstracted into the furniture design of the room, while the Tolu bommalata puppets, locally produced, have been used in their original form to promote and showcase and 'document' the dying craft.

The Kitchen

The theme of the kitchen is Bidriware, another beautiful craft of Andhra Pradesh. It may not be the birthplace of Bidri, but some of the finest bidri work is produced here.
