Malaysia experienced on-and-off lockdown for two years in a row at an unprecedented scale because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its potential as a driver for motivation to do things differently is only beginning to be realised by the team behind CUTOUT. Its latest issue - themed 'Celebration' - is the 26th and also the last issue in this format before the team embarks on a new journey to bring us more refreshing content.

CUTOUT’s co-founder, Jay Lim re-created a whole new reading experience with this issue by exploring pearl foil stamping on the masthead and rainbow foil stamping on the cover. The pages are bound together to expose a naked spine – something that reflects the team’s vulnerability to change and willingness to restart after a crisis.

For this issue, the orange-green palette with blue undertone was chosen precisely because it sets a celebratory mood and felt special, significant and reflective of the burst of fireworks. The finished issue – of 84 pages long and each spread opens beautifully – helps convey the message that literally screams “good vibes only” and has an eye-catching key visual that makes it feel more like a collectible art than a magazine.

The issue’s content was long in the making since the pandemic halted production. Over time, as things started to change because of it, the content evolved to include stories of designers about how they manoeuvre their businesses during these hard times and what the readers can possibly learn from their experiences, something that would spark inspiration.
