Digitally manipulating handmade marks to create a black-and-white composition that spells a word while conveying the emotions and energy associated with it.
The initial step was to play around with black paint and found objects to create various marks. I then searched for words that encompassed the attitude or tone of these marks. For example, a long and twisting line could be described as ambling or wandering while a collection of small blobs might be associated with splatter.
After finding words I liked, I worked to find letterforms within the marks that could be used to construct the final composition. I chose one of these thumbnails to render digitally by using layer masks in Adobe Photoshop to obscure parts of the original mark and reveal hidden letterforms.

For the final solution, I was inspired by scenes where cartoon characters are electrocuted and their skeletons are briefly illuminated. The broken letterforms create a tension that imitates the energy of electricity. The undulating letters mirror the flowing of currents.
