Sustained Investigation #6

                     Sustained Investigation # 6
This project is based on my sustained investigation about a depiction of Mexican Culture in the United States. I decided to portray a familiar activity that happens in my living room.
I started with a background of a living room to set the scene for the rest of the project.
I then found a jpg picture on Unsplash of a women who is sitting on her couch worried. I used the quick selection tool to outline the women and deselected her from my background.

I then resized her and placed her on the couch and erased part of her leg to make it look like she was really sitting on the couch.
I then wanted to find a way to depict that the mother was having a difficult time understanding the process her daughter as going through. I decided using a Mexican flag could possibly suggest that the mother only spoke Spanish.

I resized the picture and placed it over the mother with a lower opacity. I then quick selected the other to make her outline appear onto the flag and cut the flag around her outline.

I wanted to make the mom look more interesting so I added a brush filter over her.
I wanted to add a daughter that would look like she was working on important college paperwork. I could not find a picture online so instead I posed my friend and took a picture of her in the pose I wanted.

I then imported her picture and used a quick selection tool to detach her from the rest of the background. I resized her and erased some of her back in order to blend into the couch more seamlessly. I wanted to again depict that the girl did speak English so I found an American Flag online and resized it to fit her body.

I lowered the opacity on the flag and quick selected the girls body in order to make the flag the same shape. I again used a brush filter.
I then wanted to find some paperwork that the girl could be doing. I found some pictures online and used the quick selection tool to remove the papers from their background. I then resized them placed them on the table and also placed a paper in her hand by flipping one of the pages horizontally.

I did not think the idea was coming together to so I decided to add a computer as if she was also doing online applications. I used the quick selection tool, resized it and blurred the bottom to make it mesh with the table a little bit more.
I wanted the viewer to understand the project a little it more so I created a projection of the computer screen onto the wall with a pen tool and tinted it with a gray color using the paint bucket tool.
Lastly I added a screenshot of the college application site Common App in order to better depict the situation.

This finished off my project perfectly.

I have had this personal experience of having to apply to college and my mom not being able to help me because she does not understand the US college application process.
