»Poster issue« Grafikmagazin 05.21

As big as posters are, visually they need to work even when you see them just stamp-sized. And even so a compelling idea and a clever design concept is essential, there is no time for explanations. Either a poster captures your attention within seconds or it’s no good. All this makes poster design one of the most challenging fields of design, but also one of its most rewarding. In this issue we take a closer look at what makes posters successful.

We also present a lot of projects and ideas that center around the topic of sustainability. And of course there’s a lot to fuel your own creativity: branding projects, logo designs, type design, magazines, books, illustrations and plainly a lot of great design.

All this and much more awaits you in our Grafik+ section on »poster design« and in Grafikmagazin 05.21.
Content

»To underestimate people intellectually is an insult«, that’s what designer Fons Hickmann told us during an interview and yes, design needs to be challenging and to stimulate thought. In this issue our Grafik+ section is dedicated to »poster design« and thereby to a medium that stimulates us like no other. No matter whether it’s used to advertise cultural events or takes the role of a political activist, a poster can challenge and touch us at the same time.

The second focus of this issue is on »sustainability«. Everybody is talking about protecting the environment and acting more ecologically friendly, but we want to look at projects and approaches that are less obvious but nevertheless thought provoking. And of course our readers can also expect a lot of creative input. We present the results of the »European Design Awards 2021«, explain what performative design is and take a look at »Junge Grafik« and the best student projects from Switzerland. And as always there’s great books and magazines to be discovered, type design and great illustrations.

The cover

Sometimes all you need to make a good cover is a great motive and a pleasing paper. For the cover of this issue we chose a design by PosterLad, which is not only great to look at, but also sends a message we sometimes need these days: It’s OK!

The cover was printed on Munken Polar in 300 gsm. The uncoated paper feels very nice to the touch and its production process is fully Cradle to Cradle certified. The Munken Design Range also carries the FSC and EU Ecolabel certificates.
