Logos are an essential part of any corporate identity. They make brands stand out and help companies to form a bond with customers. In this issue we look at logos and their designs from various different angles and try to find out, what makes them successful.

Content

In this issue we focus on »Logo Design« and present all kinds of remarkable solutions. We talked to Jens Müller about the history of logo design and to Nadine Chahine, who successfully transforms logo from Latin to Arabic. Marcos Larger, a designer from Uruguay designed his first logos in the sixties and studio 1924us draws old crafts to design logos with a unique feel.

In our section on »photography« we present the network of femxphotographers and a project that documents the hardships of lesbians in South Afrika. A German-Iranian designer uses headscarfs to portray Iranian women's wishes to lead a free life.

How can designers present themselves best? This is what we want to find out in our focus on self-portrayal. We talked to a photographer who founded his own magazine and network to get support and professional input and a coach told us more about the benefits of personal branding.

In our showroom section we take a look at the work of Jean-Jacques Sempé, a brilliant illustrator from France who would have turned 90 this year. Javier Jaén was chosen as one of the most creative people from Spain and loves designs with a twist. The Dutch photographer André van den Bos tells us about his unusual job: forensic photography and Stack Magazines presents some of the world's most remarkable indie mags.

And as always there’s lots more to be discovered, type design and articles on design & research and some brilliant photography.

The cover

A logo is a symbol and this cover plays with type and forms and the notion of what a logo can be. To give the motive more depth we enhanced the silk screen printing with spot varnish.

The cover was printed on Stardream in 285 gsm. This paper has a metallic shine and we used it in the three colours Anthracite, Fine Gold and Citrine. On the inside pages we used Kingdom Wove, both qualities are sold through Igepa.
