Back story | Передісторія
In 2020, during the first lockdown, we wondered whether it was possible to make life underground comfortable if life on Earth became just impossible. That's how we came up with our Plan B — a project proposal for an underground bunker that made headlines across the globe and was published on about 200 media platforms. In 2021, we moved along and tried to imagine our lives away from planet Earth. Thus we came up with our Plan C, a Martian settlement concept.
—2020 року під час першого локдауну ми задумалися, чи можливо зробити комфортним життя під землею, якщо на її поверхні воно стане неможливим. Так з'явився наш Plan B — проєктна пропозиція підземного бункера, який облетів весь світ і був опублікований у більш ніж 200 виданнях. 2021 року ми пішли далі та спробували уявити наше життя за межами планети Земля. Так з'явився Plan C — концепт поселення на Марсі.
Welcome to Mars | Ласкаво просимо на Марс
Plan C is our vision of the aesthetics of the future that may never come.
There is currently no evidence of possible Mars colonization. It is unknown whether this cold, distant planet will be able to accept people. There are no rockets that can deliver a piece of much-needed equipment over a distance of 225 million kilometers. At the same time, Mars is the most similar planet to Earth out of all in the solar system.

Plan C — це наше бачення естетики майбутнього, яке, цілком можливо, ніколи не настане.
Наразі не існує жодних доказів ймовірної колонізації Марсу. Невідомо, чи ця холодна далека планета зможе прийняти людей. Не існує ракет, які б могли доставити таку кількість необхідного обладнання на відстань 225 мільйонів кілометрів. Водночас Марс — найбільш подібний до Землі з усіх планет Сонячної системи.
Let us remind you what Mars is all about: the atmospheric pressure equivalent to climbing three times as high as Everest, an atmosphere with an extremely low density almost completely lacking in oxygen, active solar radiation on the planet’s surface, low gravity, and an average air temperature of −50°C. As a bonus, there are frequent sandstorms up to 100 m/s and meteorites. If Earth has a hypothetical "blanket" — the atmosphere that protects it from solar radiation and solids — then Mars may surprise you with a random meteorite shower from time to time. And who’s to say what other factors are awaiting us.
And yet, people are great dreamers and inventors, so — welcome to Mars.

А ще Марс — це тиск, як на трьох Еверестах, атмосфера з вкрай низькою щільністю, майже повна відсутність кисню, активна сонячна радіація на поверхні планети, низька гравітація та середня температура повітря −50°C. Бонусом — часті піщані бурі до 100 м/с та метеорити. Якщо в Землі є умовна «ковдра» — атмосфера планети, яка захищає від сонячної радіації та твердих тіл, то на Марсі ми маємо усі шанси потрапити під метеоритний дощ. І ще купа факторів, про які ми навіть не здогадуємося.
А втім, люди — великі мрійники та винахідники, тому — ласкаво просимо на Марс.
Never say never | Ніколи не кажи ніколи
Scholars often appeal to the concept of terraforming. This is the modification of the atmosphere, temperature, and ecology of the planet to make it suitable for terrestrial plants and animals. Simply put, it is the transformation of space into one that can support human life.
Науковці часто апелюють до поняття тераформування. Це зміна кліматичних умов планети для приведення атмосфери, температури та екології до стану, придатного для проживання земних рослин і тварин. Простіше кажучи — це трансформація простору в такий, де є сприятливі умови для життя/
For Plan C, we took a hypothetical point of time when:
– there are ways to process Martian resources;
– the robotic technology is functioning on Mars;
– there are ways to eliminate radiation from regolith (residual soil) and produce the required amount of oxygen, water, and food.
Under these conditions, there will be a chance to build our Plan C — a fully-fledged place with all the necessary conditions.

Для Plan C ми взяли умовну часову точку, коли:
– знайдені способи перероблення марсіанських ресурсів;
– на Марсі вже представлена робототехніка;
– знайдені шляхи усунення радіації з реголіту й виробництва необхідної кількості кисню, води та продовольства.
За цих умов ми зможемо збудувати наш Plan C — повноцінне місце для життя з усіма необхідними умовами.
Protective bagel | Захисний бублик
Plan C is an autonomous settlement, the outer walls of which must be built with 3D printers. People won't be able to do it because it is only inside buildings where it's possible to move freely without suits and oxygen devices.
The settlement needs to be as close to the equator as possible to enable the achievement of such pressures and temperatures that will make the environment as habitable as possible. Plan C should be located on the slope of the crater that will protect it from sandstorms and radiation. Thus the shape of the building resembles a torus or, simply put, a bagel.
So we have a protective "bagel" with a cold, dead, radiation-permeated Mars on the other side.

Plan C — це автономне поселення, зовнішні стіни якого будуть збудовані 3D-принтерами. Люди цим займатися не зможуть, бо вільно пересуватися без костюмів та апаратів з киснем можливо тільки всередині будівлі.
Поселення має знаходитися якомога ближче до екватора, щоб уможливити досягнення такого тиску й температури, які будуть максимально придатними для життя. Plan C має розміщуватися на схилі кратера для забезпечення належного захисту від піщаних бур і радіації, тому за своєю формою будівля нагадує тор або ж звичайний бублик.
Отже, маємо захисний «бублик», по той бік якого — мертвий, холодний і пронизаний радіацією Марс.

Inside the bagel | Те, що всередині
There is a public hall stretching through the entire settlement that functions as a place for long walks and a dining area. Half of our "bagel" is occupied by sleeping accommodations, and the other half — by technical, research, and common areas.
The ambiance of the interiors combines two worlds — the unknown Mars and the near-and-dear Earth. Sandstorms were responsible for the color scheme, plants — for the ability to breathe deeply, and the science of the future — for the ability to live on a dead planet.

Вздовж усього поселення простягається загальний коридор, який слугуватиме і місцем для прогулянок, і зоною для харчування. Половину нашого «бублика» займають спальні зони, іншу половину — технічні, дослідницькі та загальні зони.
Атмосфера інтер’єрів поєднала в собі два світи: незвіданий Марс та рідну Землю. За колірну гаму відповідали піщані бурі, за можливість дихати на повні груди — живі рослини, за можливість жити на мертвій планеті — наука майбутнього.
The Martian jungle | Коридор — марсіанські джунглі
Plants are the best friends in the process of earthlings' adaptation to space life. Along the entire hall, there are trees and greenery, which will convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen with the help of phyto-lighting. Therefore, a way to the common areas resembles a walk in the open air.

Рослини — найкращі друзі в процесі адаптації землян до космічного життя. Вздовж усього коридору — дерева та зелень, які завдяки фітоосвітленню будуть перетворювати вуглекислий газ та воду в кисень. Так, дорога до загальних зон нагадує звичайну прогулянку просто неба.
"Serious" zones | «Серйозні» зони
Among the vital areas for the space settlement, there is a medical care center and an isolation ward, a research center that monitors the planets and the atmosphere, chemical and biological laboratories, a control area, and an administrative block. For safe entry and exit, it is important to develop a gateway where one can remove or put on a suit for space travel.

Серед життєво необхідних зон для космічного поселення — медичний блок та ізолятор, дослідницький центр, в якому спостерігають за планетами та атмосферою, хімічні та біологічні лабораторії, диспетчерський центр та адміністративний блок. Для безпечного входу та виходу важливо розробити шлюз, в якому можна буде зняти або ж навпаки одягнути костюм для космічних прогулянок.
Greetings from Earth | Земний привіт
Since all food must be grown on-site, the agricultural area is another must-have here. To maintain the cosmic balance, spherical greenhouses with vegetables resemble small planets maneuvering in open space — these are designer capsules for growing plants with phyto-lamps. The equipment has several modes, including the ability to switch the light and completely close the capsule.

Оскільки усі харчові продукти мають вирощуватися на місці, аграрна зона — ще один must have. Для підтримання космічного балансу сферичні теплиці з овочами нагадують маленькі планети, що лавірують у відкритому космосі, — це спеціально розроблені капсули для вирощування рослин за допомогою фітоосвітлення. Обладнання має декілька режимів з можливістю перемикання світла та повного закриття капсули.
Conference zone | Зона для переговорів
Meeting place for astronauts, medical workers, and all residents of the settlement. Under the walls, there are boulders where you can sit, lie down, and dream about the future worlds that await us. The hologram of the Earth in the center of the room is a reminder of our first home. Neon lighting allows one to tune in some discussion or turn on the mood of a Martian party — no one canceled leisure time in space.

Місце зустрічі астронавтів, медиків й усіх жителів поселення. Попід стінами простягнулися кам’янисті брили — тут можна сидіти, лежати та мріяти про майбутні світи, які нас чекають. Голограма Землі у центрі кімнати — нагадування про наш перший дім. Неонова підсвітка дозволяє налаштуватися на важливе обговорення або ж ввімкнути настрій марсіанської вечірки, — відпочинок у космосі ніхто не скасовував.
Private areas | Приватні зони
The bedrooms are designed for one or two people. Instead of a ceiling, there is a big screen with landscapes of a cloudy sky, the Milky Way, or a favorite TV series. There are no extra details and furniture in the room — one can't take ten suitcases to Mars, so we left just the essentials.

Спальні кімнати розраховані на одну або дві особи. Замість стелі тут — величезний екран з пейзажами хмарного неба, Чумацького шляху чи улюбленим серіалом. У кімнаті немає зайвих деталей і меблів — десять валіз на Марс взяти не вдасться, тому ми залишили в інтер’єрі найнеобхідніше.
Gym | Спортзал
Exercising on another planet is not just about keeping the body in good shape, but a prerequisite for maintaining viability. To prevent muscle atrophy due to low gravity, we have developed an area of exercise bikes, and to make it easier for people to survive the adaptation period, the design of the pool resembles a narrow mountain valley.

Заняття спортом на іншій планеті — це не просто бажання підтримувати тіло в хорошій формі, а обов’язкова умова для підтримки життєздатності. Щоб запобігти атрофії м’язів через низьку гравітацію ми розробили зону велотренажерів, а щоб землянам було легше пережити період адаптації — дизайн басейну нагадує вузьку гірську долину.
In a separate room, there is a floating capsule — a place for recovery, restart of consciousness, and immersion into the inner. The capsule will help the new inhabitants of Mars to free their thoughts from sandstorms, reduce the cosmic impact on the body and mind, and finally adapt to the new conditions, a new home.

В окремому приміщенні знаходиться капсула для флоатингу — місце для відновлення, перезапуску свідомості та занурення у внутрішнє «я». Капсула допоможе новим жителям Марсу звільнити свої думки від піщаних бур, зменшити космічний вплив на тіло й розум і врешті — адаптуватися до нових умов, нового дому.
"During a long stay on an alien planet, one of the main problems for our mental health is the lack of usual aesthetics. People want to see the beauty around them, even on Mars. Your team has managed to integrate a beautiful and practical space into a rather harsh Martian landscape," comments Volodymyr Usov, a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and former head of the State Space Agency of Ukraine.
It would be a dream to look years ahead and see what life will be like on other planets. As true romantics, we strongly believe in it. Because after all, what else besides our dreams can move us forward?

«Під час довгого перебування на чужій планеті, одна з головних проблем для нашої психіки — це відсутність звичної нам естетики. Людині хочеться бачити красу навколо себе навіть на Марсі. Вам вдалося інтегрувати красивий та практичний простір в досить суворий марсіанський ландшафт», — коментує Володимир Усов, член Міжнародної академії астронавтики та колишній голова Державного космічного агентства України.
Цікаво було б зазирнути на n років вперед і подивитися, яким насправді буде життя на інших планетах. В тому, що воно буде — ми, романтики, впевнені. Адже що ще, окрім наших мрій, здатне рухати нас вперед?
