Intergenerational Center

The Intergenerational Center was a Studio 3 design project at Central Michigan University. Together with my partner, Jessica Gausden, we were able to complete this beautiful project as if it was actually built and used. We developed an Art Nouveau inspired space which had living quarters for the elderly, as well as a daycare center for infants and children. We used color, artwork, hand-painted murals, and natural materials such as wood trim and cork flooring to evoke happiness and mental clarity, and to encourage people to really use the space. Users and visitors of all ages would be inspired by the space to gather, communicate, learn, create, and grow.
The design of the space, including the circular paths, placement of furniture, and use of color and light, all encourage people to draw together and talk about the artwork within the space. Children and elderly would also be persuaded to increase their mobility within the space. We incorporated two wrought iron Art Nouveau tree sculptures, adorned with blown glass flowers inspired by the work of Dale Chihuly. Two of these trees were placed in central locations in the space, reaching up to domed skylights. The Intergenerational Center had many windows and a large central courtyard where people would be encouraged to play, enjoy the garden, and interact.
The goal of the Intergenerational Center was to break down barriers between generations and provide a space which was safe and easy to use for all residents and visitors, an environment which was comfortable and non-sterile. We paid great attention to detail throughout the entire process, displaying our research and knowledge of codes, and completing sketches, CAD drawings, presentation boards, SketchUp drawings, and written documents including a finish code key, finish schedule, written specifications, and quotations.
