An armed XI (Fighter) Squadron Typhoon is scrambled. Its primary goal is to reach the potential threat as quickly as possible. With a performance take-off, the Typhoon goes from stationary to airborne in around 7 seconds.
A second stand-off aircraft is launched to support the first. RAF Voyager tanker aircraft are also launched to support the interception and provide fuel if necessary.
To maintain readiness, other jets are on standby and ready to intercept.
For RAF Crews this is a 24hr shift, maintained by Squadron aircrew and engineers 365 days a year.
