This collage is made up of a myriad of things that Natalia likes and dislikes, represented by red and black colors respectively. Done in pen ink, “Marionatte” is a pun (abbreviation of Natalia’s name within) on the actual word Marionette, a string puppet. Natalia sometimes feels controlled and manipulated by family and the society at large; I represented this by portraying her as a puppet on strings and in a cage, looking to be set free.
The hummingbirds symbolizes various concepts; their rapid speed and agility gives them a name for being harbinger of (good) news. Also a symbol of beauty, love and joy, they are seemingly tireless and always in search for the sweetest nectar. This is what I hope for my new friend, Natalia. To be tireless and almost relentless in the pursuit of success and happiness.
