Moods of Lake Superior Part I

Moods of Lake Superior
Part I: Lake Superior shoreline from Minnesota
Since living in Minnesota, I have been photographing Lake Superior, which is located along the northeastern part of the state, for a few years now. This area is also known as the North Shore. I recently had the opportunity to photograph the lake from the other side in Michigan. Lake Superior is known as Gitchi-gami to the native Ojibwe people, meaning "Great Lake". It is the largest freshwater lake in the world in area and the third largest by volume. It is also the coldest of the five Great Lakes and rarely freezes over. Lake Superior has different moods, depending on which way the wind is blowing. One day it can be calm and the next day, have huge waves crashing on the shore from gale force winds. The sunrises and sunsets can be pretty spectacular. Autumn is an incredible time of year to see the maples in colors of red, orange and yellow along the shore. When there are subzero days in the winter, the air and wind will create "seasmoke" over the open water. Ice builds up along the shoreline when the winters are cold and long. This collection of photos that I have taken over the years displays a bit of the mood and scenery you can experience when going to Lake Superior. Part two will be a series of images from the Michigan side of the lake.
