With the spotlight on London in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics, the London Calling website delivers a unique perspective on the British capital to coincide with special programming from the BBC. Using principles of gamification, we aimed to show insights into London using a stylised map powered by the Google Maps API to allow users to explore and find out more about the diverse city during a 6-week campaign.
Encouraging a spirit of discovery and exploration, the London Calling map takes users on a journey through different districts, with ‘Hotspots’ revealing random facts and surprise quizzes allowing users to gain entry codes to enter the main prize draw.

A mobile experience
Viewing London Calling on iPhone or Android introduced the new element essential to the process of discovery - touch.
Pinching, pulling and tapping on the map allowed the Google Map API to really come into its own, giving users a real sense of exploration. Users could also seamlessly jump between their social media networks and the map to take a quiz or enter the main competition.
