FOTB Title Sequence

Motion Graphics
After Effects
Through a combination of macro photography and animation, I created this title sequence for the design festival FOTB in 2010.

For this film, I chose a variety of materials with magnetic properties as the on-screen heroes. These ranged from magnetic sand to ferrofluid, to various forms of neodymium magnets and many more.

The choice of materials was driven by the desire to graphically represent the concepts of attraction and repulsion. The idea that graphic artists of all sorts attend events such as FOTB because they are inspired and therefore attracted to each other's creative work, while at the same time often competing in the same fields as peers, which is how the idea of repulsion shows up.

Each of the speakers' names were featured throughout the video and preceded by an letterforms that were custom-designed and laser-cut. The letters later placed over each corresponding magnetic material, allowing for the material itself to be celebrated further.

The majority of the video was shot on a Canon 5D with 100mm macro, MPE 65mm macro, 24-105mm and 90mm TS. A few of the shots were captured with the Phantom camera and a 100mm macro lens as well. The environment for of each of these films was built practically as a simple box constructed out of paper, foam and acrylic.
