Jal Thal Mal has been written with the intent of explaining the concept of sanitation in its entirety. It introduces the subject through cultural, political and social contexts. Sopan Joshi, the author, articulated that the book and its illustrations needed to be approachable instead of opinionated and engage the reader. The illustrations are black and white for ease of production and for the contrast it provides. Using a single colour also allowed us to portray the complexity of the subject quite accurately.

The cover title has been lettered by Mr Rajeev Prakash Khare. We’re grateful to David Březina of Rosetta Type Foundry for helping us with the Unicode Devanagari font application.
