Architecture Part 1 - Year 2 Sustainable Design
The Sustainable Design module was the second design module of the year based in the University of Lincoln campus adjacent to the university library. The brief was to produce a Sustainable welcome centre for the university where it could be a catalyst for green buildings in the vicinity of the site.
Sustainable Development Goals:
The building targets three of the seventeen goals
(6) - Clean Water and Sanitation, (7) - Affordable and Clean Energy, (13) - Climate Action
Design Development
Reading from left to right, top to bottom. 6 initial designs that were developed base on pedestrian movement, special adjacencies and inspired by the surrounding overhangs. No #1 is inspired from Ole Scheeren’s Vertical Village, the idea of getting the optimal amount of space on location utilising overhanging elements, and is then developed.
Isometric & Plans
Below shows the side-by-side images of the final proposed isometric and plan views.
Visualizations
Below shows several visuals of the final building form, including the props & vegetation. Most of the glazing is west facing, which creates overheating in the building. To combat this, deciduous vines and shrubs are planted in the raised beds allowing shading in the summer but natural heat in the winter. Virginia Creeper is a type of vine which climbs up structures during the spring and summer months but then its dies and over winter.
