Sand Worlds

Sand worlds is a set of abstract explorations, done as a collaboration with my friend and a painter, David Robey

The idea behind this collaboration is to test how traditional art can be used as a driving force to create a digital one. This is the first of several planned collaborations.

David created a series of acrylic paintings, using a self made mechanism, which allowed him to utilize the power of centripetal force. He is then mixing this technique with intentional brush strokes to create magnificent results.

We photographed the whole series and turned the paintings into a digital form. I used that data as texture inputs to drive the emission of millions of digital grains of sand. The grains are made using X-Particles. Their upward motion is tied to the brightness of the texture input.
