Seattle, WA

MCD designed a comprehensive pedestrian Wayfinding Master plan for a 20 sq. block urban neighborhood located in South Lake Union, the new creative and technology hub of Seattle.

The neighborhood is home to a Fortune 100 company who commissioned MCD to develop the unique-to-place wayfinding strategy. The project guides, directs and informs an estimated 27,000 new employees along with visitors from around the world.
Pedestrian directories are placed in plazas and public spaces around the company's new buildings. For ease of recognition and continuity across all languages, MCD developed a consistent, cohesive design language with a contemporary look and feel that fits the wide variety of building styles in the neighborhood. The Directories incorporate wayfinding, map panels, and at the request of the client, the design team also embedded “Easter Eggs” into the base panel of the Directories: colorful photos of everyday objects.
Story Walls with hand drawn illustrations, photography and color are embedded as Easter Eggs throughout the campus, highlighting company lore and surrounding neighborhood features and oddities.

Everything communicates, from parking garage graphics to the plazas. The graphics and Easter Eggs enrich the neighborhood experience for team members, guests and the public.
Interior signs share a consistent shape, size and type style. The colors, materials and personality however, align with interior elements of each building.
