From Humble Beginnings to Success in the Spotlight

"From Humble Beginnings to Success in the Spotlight"

A magazine spread designed for The Newtowne Players, a local theater organization, for use in their 10th anniversary publication. Article written by Emily Funderburk. Photos provided by Stacey Mulrooney.

Photos edited in Adobe Photoshop CS5; Graphics created with Adobe Illustrator CS5; Final layout created in Adobe InDesign CS5
For this article, the emphasis was on the creation of the theater and theater group. The author of the piece sat down and interviewed theater founder, Wendy Heidrich, and wrote a wonderful piece.

As a designer, I was given freedom on the entire design and layout of the spread. I chose something to reflect the title; from humble beginnings.
Using a commercial free stock image, I echoed the color of the woodgrain through the layout. The photos I had to work with were pre-hi resolution era, so I decided to give them a "retro" treatment and created a border for each one in Adobe Photoshop. This not only hid the pixelation of the images, but helped compliment the overall design.
The layout on the second page started simply as a concept. I wanted a banner effect, and taught myself how to translate what was in my head into the design used. The color scheme chosen helped tie everything together.
