This project was done as a part of Hank Richardson's Information Design class at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
This book is a collaboration between myself and the Director of Curriculum for K-12 schools in Marietta City as well as many teachers throughout the system and parents of autistic children. Through my meetings with the Director, we discovered the great number of teachers who have autistic children in their classrooms, but who have no idea what that means other than that they are different, and greatly want to help these students succeed, but have written them off as a lost cause because they don’t understand them.
Raising awareness became very important to this project. Historically stamps have been used to raise awareness, and that is exactly what is needed, more awareness of what autism is. Stamps are also something that everyone uses and that can land right on your doorstep without feeling invasive. This book "A Philatelic Pocket Guide to Autism" aims to explain each of the different symptoms that could, but don't necessarily, occur with people who are on the autism spectrum.
Each Page contains a stamp as well as a short discription of what that "symptom" is as well as more information for those who want to learn more.
