For the second half of 2019 we had a quite free topic for our sports goods subject. The only restriction was that the article is connected to the user through a binding system. So the desicion fell quite fast for me.
I combined a lot of different takes on the binding system from several leading manufacturers in the field, but mostly went with the flow concept, since it is the most practical. As a snowboarder myself I can definitely say that zipping and unzipping your binding is sometimes really frustrating. It doesn't consume that much time but it sums up and puts you out of your experience quite often, so you can say the flow system changed everything back in the day.
But I also find Cap-Straps really comfy and they provide a better fit and toe control, so I included one of those as well as additional buckles instead of clamps. They add a little more weight, but it's easier to fine tune your fit while boarding on both sides of the boot.
This baseplate model was also part of my first design, since I have a lot of refernece hat home and focused on technical accuracy and detail more than design. I built it in Rhinoceros to get a exact mesh for 3D printing.
Some impressions of my Rhinoceros build and shape concepts from back in 2019
