In our clay workshop with CUBE Bikes back in 2018 I designed a Dirt-Bike / Bmx Hardhat Helmet. I focussed on ventilation, better fit through adjustable headbands and the ability to quickly attach a goPro on the top. The design got approved at the end of the workshop and CUBE went into developing their own version of it called the "Dirt 2.0" which got released in 2019.
I made a 3D-Scan of the helmet back then and rebuilt it entirely in blender for animation. There I could add the details that were important to fully understand my design choices and to show the improvements I had planned. Like a adjustable headband for a better fit, meshes for all vents and a goPro to show the thread hole I placed on top for that purpose.
Two concepts for a bike helmet where required and these where the ones that got into the final round. Cube went for the hard-hat since they haven't had one in their product line at this point and liked my design. For me the decision would have been quit tough.
As a snowboarder the most important aspect of the helmet was ventilation and air circulation, which is a common problem in hardhats because too much holes in the surface weakens the structural integrity. So instead of creating more vents I positioned them differently like on the top edge as well as horizontal ones on the neck. The vents on the top got sharper edges now to catch more wind and give it more direction.
The clay model went through a lot of changes over the course of the workshop. But every decision and improved on the previous one until the final result satisfied the commission as well as me. Though the foam head sadly had to suffer through the whole process.
