Solace is a modular system for therapeutical use. It was designed to be a counterpart to our modern world. A place of quiet, relaxation and rest. For we can't really ease our minds and find to ourselves these days even if we think we do. This often leads to stress, anxieties, burnouts and other psychological or physical health issues.
I designed Solace to be as individual as every person and to adapt to their own way of relaxation. It can basically be anything you need it to be and can be redesigned in an instant to support your wishes. From a hammock, to a tent or a chair in a matter of seconds.
The material can be changed to your liking. From different types and colors of fabric and leather, to wood, acrylic plastic, or metal elements for climbing plants and even cardboard. The limits are only set by your imagination. You can add whatever you want and build your perfect oasis of recreation by adding lights, pillows, your favorite blanket, by clipping in some fotos, notes, or even designing your very own panels.
For some quality time alone, for naps in the garden or reading a book. For a sleepover together, playing, hiding, a movie night with friends or just for thinking and drawing.
The base construction of my prototype consists of two different 3D-printed corner connectors, wooden or aluminium elements, ropes and welded triangles for support.
Sewing two layers of thick lining material unto two layers of mesh was actually quite frustrating, but in the end it really paid off. The prototype was made with wood and a first set of 3D printed corner connectors, some old fabric pieces, keychain rings, cords and a lot of tape. From there it was still a long way of improving the construction, changing materials as well as the sewing patterns and hours of 3D printing, to get to my final goal: having a fully functional piece of furniture, that carries a full grown human.
There are basically three different layers: the first one is a durable mesh that carries the weight. Then a thick layer of filt lining and a fluffy fur for comfort on top. I placed straps along the edges and corners for additional strength and to clip the whole nest unto the construction or to remove it for cleaning.
First sketches, 2D - renderiangs and CAD studies. I settled for the dodecaeder version because it held the most possibilities.
First rough ideas made with rhinoceros 6 shows different builds that were probable with this construction method.
